From Texas to the World chronicles the philanthropic and creative spirit of the individuals who have left enduring impressions on both the University of Texas at Dallas and the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition focuses on artworks that came to the DMA’s collection through the generosity and vision of Eugene and Margaret McDermott, Cecil and Ida Green, Erik Jonsson, Rick Brettell, and Bonnie Pitman, all of whom have also impactfully contributed to UTD as founders and members of the academic community. From Texas to the World represents the inaugural installation of the multiyear exhibition partnership between the DMA and UTD.
From its inception, the Dallas Museum of Art has dedicated resources to collecting globally representative works of art. Yet the museum has remained mindful of its Texas roots and continues to celebrate the talent and cultural richness of the region through acquisitions of works by Texas artists. From 1943 to 1964, Dallas artist Jerry Bywaters served as director of what was then called the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. More recently, the DMA has provided financial support to both emerging and established artists from Texas and the Southwestern United States, many of whom have become nationally recognized. The directorships of both Rick Brettell (1989–1992) and Bonnie Pitman (2007–2011) saw the museum further expand its Texas focus through the acquisition of works by local artists, a variety of which are represented in this gallery.
The Dallas Museum of Art’s diverse collection contains a vast array of artworks spanning continents, cultures, and historical periods. By celebrating the temporal and geographical expanse of artistic expression, the collection offers opportunities to explore, learn, and take inspiration from the rich tapestry of human creativity. Visitors can view masterpieces from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and beyond. Together they offer a truly global perspective on art and culture. Both the Eugene and Margaret McDermott Art Fund and Cecil and Ida Green Acquisition Fund have supported the acquisition of numerous global artworks. In addition, the gifts of Erik Jonsson, and the acquisitions made during the directorships of Rick Brettell and Bonnie Pitman reinforce the museum’s commitment to showcasing a range of artistic production from around the United States and the world.
