Object Study Room

Object Study Room Guidelines

The Crow Museum of Asian Art Object Study Room welcomes scholars, the public, and groups of up to 10 people, including college and university classes. To schedule a visit, complete the Viewing Request Form below. Requests must be made at least two weeks before the viewing date, and there is a limit of five pieces that can be requested at one time (unless prior approval has been sought).

Viewings must be scheduled during office hours, which are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Object Study Room is not available during University holidays and weekends.

Each request is considered based on the logistics of access and staff ability to grant the request. Objects that are too fragile and/or too heavy to move may not be approved for viewing or may incur a fee. The museum reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to deny a viewing request. If the request is granted, the object(s) will be examined in the Object Study Room. No visitor is allowed access to the museum storage.

The guidelines below must be followed at all times:

  • No pens, bags/backpacks, coats, umbrellas, water bottles or liquids of any kind.
  • No food, gum, cough drops, hard candy—please dispose of these before entering the Object Study Room.
  • Large bags and other restricted items will be checked at the reception desk upon arrival.
  • Items allowed in the study rooms: Wood encased pencils, notebooks, laptops, tablets and/or cell phones.
  • Please do not put pencils, notebooks, laptops, tablets or cell phones down next to any artwork that may be on the table.
  • Please avoid using a charger while in the room; if using a charger cannot be avoided, make sure the cord does not create a tripping hazard.
  • Please do not touch the artwork. If a closer look is necessary or the object needs to be turned, please ask the staff member in the room and that person will do the art handling.
  • Please do not lean on the table(s) and walls where artwork is placed.
  • When leaning closely over an artwork, be careful not to let jewelry, hair, strings or other clothing fall into or onto its surface.
  • Please be aware of the proximity of your body to the artwork on display. Especially when walking past, when removing an extra layer of clothing, when photographing and when talking to other attendees.
  • Please face away from the artwork, should you need to sneeze, cough or yawn.
  • You are allowed to photograph the artwork on display. However, make sure the flash is off and do not hold the camera/cell phone/tablet directly over the artwork.
